Removing A Pet's Mess From Your Rug Without Making It Worse

April 13, 2017

pet_stains_rug.jpgIf you’re like most people, you probably treat your pet just like another member of the family. Unfortunately, sometimes that family member happens to leave unanticipated messes on your precious rugs. If you would like to learn more about how to tackle such messes without making them any worse, read on. This article will discuss two helpful strategies to be aware of when it comes to rug cleaning.

Use a putty knife for solids

Most people’s first instinct when it comes to a solid mess is to reach for a roll of paper towels. This problem with this method, however, is that it tends to leave a good deal of mess behind. Worse still, it can actually push the mess even deeper into the rug’s pile, thus leaving behind stubborn discolorations, stains, and smells.

The good news is that you may already have the best possible tool in your garage or tool box: a putty knife. The idea here is that you use this knife almost like a spatula to remove the mess. Pressing front of the knife into the pile of the rug as you push it forward, you can effectively lift away the majority of the solid without grinding it deeper into the fibers.

Invest in a handheld carpet extractor

No matter how carefully you clean up a pet’s mess, there’s always bound to be something left behind after the first pass. This is true of both solid and liquid messes. Fortunately, with the help of a handheld carpet extractor, you can easily get your rug a lot cleaner with a minimum of effort. These handheld appliances--basically small carpet extractors--utilize a scrub brush and hot water in order to remove some of the unsightly messes like these. Keep in mind that a totall removal of these messes not only requires some sort of extraction device like mentionied here but also needs the right chemicals for total removal, sanitation, and smell elimination.
